Resio and Vincent, in their studies, described a comprehensive numerical hindcast procedure for the Great Lakes. This hindcast was also the first attempt within the Corps of Engineers to use a numerical scheme for wave calculations instead of the standard empirical /analytical approach.
Resio and Vincent used wind data for a sixty-File Size: KB. WIS hindcast results are compared with measurements from in-situ buoys for quality control.

coastal waters that synthesizes observations, multi-decade hindcasts and storm event archives to meet tomorrow's coastal engineering needs today.
The Wave Information Studies (WIS) is a US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) sponsored project that generates consistent, hourly, long-term (20+ years) wave climatologies along all US coastlines, including the Great Lakes and US island territories.
Since wave hindcasts are often verified by comparing the maximum hindcast and measured significant wave heights in a storm, the bias due to sampling variability can make a correct hindcast appear to be too low. In this paper we show how the magnitude of the biases can be calculated from the sample length and the shape of the wave spectrum.
The objective of the Wave Information Studies is to provide high-quality coastal wave hindcast model estimates, wave analyses products and decision tools nationwide. Wave estimates are hindcast using high quality wind fields, ice fields where appropriate and the latest wave modeling technology.

As in the case of erosion studies, these delineations illustrate the types of hazard zone studies and maps that have been produced for areas susceptible to one or more of the following coastal hazards: coastal storms, wave effects, high winds, tsunamis, erosion, bluff failures, landslides, sea level rise, and wildfires.
Often the DOC is used in coastal engineering design for projects such as beach and nearshore berm nourishments, and jetty and navigation channel designs. The dataset provided here estimates DOCs for all of the coast lines of the United States, including the Great Lakes, using the USACE Wave Information Study (WIS) wave hindcast data.
A third generation wave model run four times a day (00Z, 06Z, 12Z, and 18Z). Each run starts with 9- 6- and 3-hour hindcasts and produces forecasts of every 3 hours from the initial time out to hours (84 hours for the Great Lakes). The wave characteristics thus determined are for the significant wave -- that is, the period is that of the predominating waves, and the height is the average of the higher one-third of these predominant Size: 4MB.
Great Lakes: All. 12/17/ The Wave Information Study completed wave model simulations of extreme storm events occurring prior to The selection of these events was based on recent Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Region V updates to their Flood Map Services conducted in all five Great Lakes (noted in an earlier Announcement).

The procedure was developed for simulating time series from the Wave Information Study (WIS) data base, a 20‐year hindcast of wave height, period, and direction provided at three‐hour intervals for locations along United States coasts and the Great Lakes.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USAGE) Wave Information Study used atmospheric pres- sure data and wind data to hindcast historical wave information, including heights, periods, and directions, for the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Pacific, and Great Lakes coastal waters.
(See, for example, Jensen, and Hubertz et al., ). Wave heights derived from a hindcast should be checked against the maximum breaking wave that can be supported at the site given the av ailable depth at the desi gn still-w ater level and the nearshore bottom slope.
